Cachet: The cachet on this cover uses a striped globe illustration set against latitude and longitude lines, with a green ribbon curling across it. Inside the ribbon a small triangular sail motif appears in orange, white and blue, forming the emblem of the World Sugar Congress. The year "1974" sits beside the globe in bold type. The bilingual title "World Sugar Congress / Wêreldsuikerkongres" runs across the upper left of the cover in clean block lettering, with an airmail wing symbol and the words "Per Lugpos / By Air Mail / Par Avion" placed above it in a teal panel. Two matching Durban postmarks cancel the single stamp, each shaped like a rounded square and bearing the initials of the congress alongside the dates "13-30-6-1974". The stamp itself carries a blue and white geometric swoosh design marking the World Sugar Congress.

INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF SUGAR CANE TECHNOLOGISTS THE XVth ISSCT CONGRESS AND SUGAR TECHNOLOGY The International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists has a membership of about 1 600 drawn mainly from agricultural specialists and manufacturing technologists of cane producing countries all over the world. There are also quite a number of members from Europe, Japan, the United States and Canada who are sugar refiners and manufacturers. In addition to local technologists over 500 foreign delegates from more than 50 countries are attending the XVth ISSCT Congress held in Durban from 13 to 30 June 1974. Triennial conferences of the Society provide an opportunity to present and discuss technical papers and for delegates to meet and to acquaint themselves with conditions in some or other progressive sugar country. Die eerste ISSCT-Kongres is in 1924 in Hawaii gehou. Suid-Afrika was op die vooraand om die voorreg gehad het om as gasheer vir die Internasionale Vereniging van Suikerrietegnoloë op te tree nie, veertig jaar aanparig besluit om die Goue Jubileumkongres. The first ISSCT Congress was held in Hawaii in 1924. South Africa has been represented at all past congresses but has never had the privilege of being the host to the International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists. However, it was unanimously decided to hold the Golden Jubilee Congress (1924-1974) in South Africa. This honour is a compliment to the high standard of technology and research within the South African Sugar Industry. Sugar-cane yields from existing areas are increasing at the rate of two per cent per annum, and overhead irrigation in particular is highly developed in South Africa. Our cane breeding section is responsible for raising more than 200 000 seedlings a year and our cane varieties have an excellent reputation in many parts of the world. South Africa has some extremely modern sugar factories and bulk handling sugar silos. The industry has become one of the world leaders in diffusion and our sugar recovery efficiency is increasing rapidly. A revolution has taken place in the technology of diffusion and the treatment of ours leaders in vinnig ontwikkeling het, suikerhervinning is besig om vinnig toe te neem. Daar is ook 'n hele aantal suikerraffineerders en -vervaardigers uit Europa, Japan, die Verenigde State en Kanada onder sy ledetal. Oor die 500 oorsese afgevaardigdes van meer as 50 lande, bo en behalwe plaaslike tegnoloë woon die XVe IVST-Kongres by wat vanaf 13 tot 30 Junie 1974 in Durban plaasvind. Driejaarlikse konferensies van die Vereniging bied 'n geleentheid om tegniese referate voor te dra en te bespreek en in die een of ander vooruitstrewende suikerland toestande te ontmoet en te raak met toestande in die een of ander vooruitstrewende suikerland. Die eerste IVST-Kongres is in 1924 in Hawaii gehou. Suid-Afrika was op alle vorige kongresse verteenwoordig maar het nog nooit die voorreg gehad om as gasheer vir die Internasionale Vereniging van Suikerrietegnoloë op te tree nie. Daar was egter eenparig besluit om die Goue Jubileumkongres (1924-1974) in Suid-Afrika te hou. Hierdie eer is 'n pluimpie vir die hoë standaard van tegnologie en navorsing in die Suid-Afrikaanse Suikerbedryf. Suikerrietopbrengste uit bestaande gebiede styg teen twee persent per jaar, en veral bestaande gebiede styg teen twee persent per jaar, en veral vooruitstrewende ontwikkeling in Suid-Afrika. Ons rietvariëteite het 'n uitstekende naam in baie dele van die wêreld. Suid-Afrika beskik oor 'n paar uiters moderne suikerfabrieke en grootmaathanteringsuikerskure. Die nywerheid het een van die wêreldleiers in diffusie geword en die doeltreffendheid van ons suikerherwinning is besig om vinnig toe te neem. 'n Omwenteling het in die afgelope paar jaar in die gehalte van rusuiker plaasgevind en die vraag daarna is gevolglik baie groot. Suid-Afrikaanse rusuiker word tans as die beste ter wêreld beskou en die vraag is gevolglik baie groot.

This cover is postmarked between 13 and 30 June 1974 in Durban. It marks the XVth Congress of the International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists, held in South Africa for the first time as the Society's Golden Jubilee Congress. More than 500 foreign delegates from over 50 countries travelled to Durban for the congress, a mark of the standing South Africa's sugar industry had built since the Society's first congress in Hawaii in 1924.
