front
Cachet: The cachet shows a loose watercolor cluster of grapes rendered as overlapping circles in gold, green and deep blue tones. The style is soft and painterly rather than photographic and the grapes bleed into one another with visible brush texture. Underneath the illustration the cover states its purpose in three languages: French, English and Afrikaans, reflecting the international nature of the symposium it commemorates.

INTERNASIONALE WYNSIMPOSIUM Die Suid-Afrikaanse wynbedryf is meer as driehonderd jaar oud. P.T.—1977 INTERNATIONAL WINE SYMPOSIUM The South African wine industry is over three hundred years old. It was established by Jan van Riebeeck and it is fitting that an international technological symposium on The Quality of the Vintage will be held in Cape Town from 14 to 21 February 1977. The symposium will be under the auspices of the world body of wine-producing countries — L'Office International de la Vigne et du Vin with headquarters in Paris — and is being organized by the Oenological and Viticultural Research Institute at Stellenbosch, the Co-operative Winegrowers Association of South Africa, the Department of Agricultural Technical Services and the Cape Wine and Spirit Institute. At the symposium, more than thirty world authorities will lecture on a number of subjects relating to wine-growing, e.g. The effect of the physiological and physical condition of the grape and its chemical composition on the quality of the vintage; The effect of environmental factors on wine quality; Effects of cultivation practices on the quality of the vintage in hot regions; The influence of harvesting methods on the quality of the vintage; and other related matters of particular interest to all wine-growers throughout the world. South Africa is the fourteenth largest producer of wine in the world. The majority of its wine-growing areas lie in a radius of about 150 km from Cape Town. The climate in the area is typically Mediterranean in character and variations in rainfall, types of soil and varieties of grapes produced ensure that almost every known type of wine can be vinted. Delegates will visit these winelands and also those of the Olifants River area and will fly to Upington after the symposium to visit the viticultural areas under irrigation. The full spectrum of wines produced in South Africa varies from a light, delicate, white table wine to all varieties of red wines, sherries, ports and fortified sweet wines, brandy and liqueur. About ninety per cent of the total production is consumed locally and the remainder is exported to over thirty countries. These exports realize over R7 million annually. P.T.—1977
