Cachet: The cachet on this cover shows a young man and woman standing side by side in a sepia toned illustration, both gazing forward with a sense of purpose. He holds a book against his chest and she wears her hair in a long braid, their clothing simple and practical rather than formal. To the left the slogan "Handhaaf en Bou" appears in bold script, with the phrase "50 jaar diens aan Volk en Vaderland, 1929-1979" printed beneath the figures. This positions the cover as a fiftieth anniversary tribute to service and cultural continuity. Two matching Auckland Park postmarks cancel the stamp, each built around the FAK initials and the years 1929 to 1979. The stamp itself shows the FAK emblem, a stylised orange flame rising above the organisation's name and initials.

FEDERASIE VAN AFRIKAANSE KULTUURVERENIGINGE Die Federasie van Afrikaanse Kultuurvereniginge (FAK) is op 18 Desember 1929 in Bloemfontein gestig met die doel om Afrikanerkultuurbelange te koördineer en te bevorder. Die FAK se leuse is Handhaaf en Bou en dit word gesimboliseer deur sy embleem wat bestaan uit 'n lewenskragtige vlam wat groei uit die drie letters, FAK. Na vyftig jaar is die FAK tans 'n uitgebreide organisasie met 'n netwerk van skakelpunte oor die hele land. Die getal geaffilieerde en meewerkende liggame, d.w.s. sowel hoofbesture as plaaslike liggame en instellings, beloop bykans 4 000 en die individuele ledetal is ongeveer 22 000. Die organisasie kan dus met reg namens die georganiseerde Afrikanergemeenskap praat. Die amptelike tydskrif Handhaaf met 'n oplaag van 25 000, vervul 'n besondere rol as een van die belangrikste kultuurtydskrifte in Afrikaans. Benewens die samesnoering van alle Afrikaanse organisasies en instellings is die handhawing en bevordering van dit wat die Afrikanervolk se kultuuridentiteit bepaal die belangrikste deurlopende bedrywighede van die organisasie. 'n Volk se kultuuridentiteit weerspieël in sy geskiedenis en tradisies, gedy in sy liefde vir sy eie, flikker uit in sy karakter, sy staatkunde, sy verdediging, sy onderwys, sy ekonomie, sy gesinslewe en word verklank in sy moedertaal. FEDERATION OF AFRIKAANS CULTURAL SOCIETIES The "Federasie van Afrikaanse Kultuurvereniginge" (Federation of Afrikaans Cultural Societies), also known as the FAK, was established in Bloemfontein on 18 December 1929 with a view to co-ordinating and furthering the cultural interests of the Afrikaner. The FAK's slogan is Handhaaf en Bou (Vindicate and Cultivate) and this is symbolized by its emblem, a vigorous flame rising from the three letters FAK. After fifty years the FAK today is a vast organization with a network of contact points throughout the country. The number of affiliated and co-operating bodies, i.e. managements as well as local bodies and institutions, amounts to some 4 000 and there are some 22 000 individual members. The organization can therefore rightly speak for the organized Afrikaner community. The official organ Handhaaf, with a circulation of 25 000, plays an important part as one of the most significant cultural publications in Afrikaans. In addition to uniting all Afrikaans organizations and institutions, the vindication and furtherance of that which determines the Afrikaner's cultural identity are the most important continuing activities of the organization. A nation's cultural identity reflects in its history and traditions, thrives in its love of its own, glitters in its character, its politics, its defence, its education, its economy, its family life and is voiced in its mother tongue.

This cover is postmarked on 18 December 1979 in Auckland Park. It carries the RSA 4c stamp showing the FAK's flame emblem, issued to mark fifty years since the Federation of Afrikaans Cultural Societies was founded in Bloemfontein. By its fiftieth anniversary the FAK had grown to represent close to 4 000 affiliated bodies and around 22 000 individual members, with its journal Handhaaf reaching a circulation of 25 000 copies.
