This cover is postmarked between 20 January and 2 February 1982 in Pretoria. It marks South Africa's first international piano competition, organised by the Department of National Education and the University of South Africa. Description of the Cachet
A stylised grand piano in deep blue sits inside a circular emblem on the left of the cover. Beneath it, orange and blue ribbons curve across the design like a musical flourish, and a treble clef appears again in the postmark itself. The bilingual title runs beneath the emblem, naming the competition in Afrikaans and English along with the host city and year. The design favours bold colour blocks over fine detail, giving it a modern, confident feel for its time.

INTERNASIONALE KLAVIERKOMPETISIE PRETORIA 1982 Die Internasionale Klavierkompetisie Pretoria 1982 word deur die Departement van Nasionale Opvoeding en die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika georganiseer. Hierdie kompetisie, die eerste in sy soort wat in Suid-Afrika aangebied word, vind plaas tussen 20 Januarie en 2 Februarie 1982. Pianiste van alle nasionaliteite wat op 28 Februarie 1982 jonger as 33 jaar is, mag deelneem. Die kompetisie bestaan uit vier rondes en mededingers moet werke uit die amptelike repertoire kies. Alle mededingers moet ook 'n Suid-Afrikaanse komposisie uitvoer. Die eerste twee rondes vind in die Ou Mutual-gehoorsaal van die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika plaas en die laaste twee in die Staatsteater, Pretoria. Al hierdie optredes sal vir die publiek toeganklik wees. In die vierde ronde meeding die finaliste teen mekaar in optrede saam met die TRUK-simfonieorkes in die Operasaal van die Staatsteater. Ruim bydraes deur die Adcock-Ingram-maatskappygroep en die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika het dit die organiseerders in staat gestel om die volgende pryse uit te loof: Eerste prys: R8 000, plus 'n goue medalje Tweede prys: R4 000, plus 'n silwermedalje Derde prys: R2 000, plus 'n bronsmedalje Die wenner van die eerste prys sal ook 'n uitnodiging ontvang om in 1983 'n konsertreis te onderneem wat deur TRUK, KRUIK, SUKOVS, NARUK en SWARUK georganiseer word en wat besoeke aan die belangrike musiekentra in Suid-Afrika en Suidwes-Afrika behels. Elke pryswenner sal ook 'n kunswerk ontvang wat spesiaal deur Suid-Afrikaanse kunstenaars vir hierdie geleentheid geskep is. INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION PRETORIA 1982 The International Piano Competition Pretoria 1982 is organized by the Department of National Education and the University of South Africa. This competition, the first of its kind to be presented in South Africa, will take place from 20 January to 2 February 1982. Pianists of all nationalities who are not over the age of 33 years on 28 February 1982 may participate. The competition will involve four rounds and competitors will have to perform works chosen from the official repertoire. All competitors will also have to render a South African composition. The first two rounds will take place in the Old Mutual Auditorium of the University of South Africa and the last two in the State Theatre, Pretoria. All these performances will be open to the public. In the fourth round, finalists will compete against each other in renditions together with the PACT Symphony Orchestra in the Opera Hall of the State Theatre. Substantial contributions from the Adcock-Ingram Group of Companies and the University of South Africa have enabled the organizers to offer the following prizes: First Prize: R8 000, plus a gold medal Second Prize: R4 000, plus a silver medal Third Prize: R2 000, plus a bronze medal The winner of the first prize will also receive an invitation to undertake a concert tour in 1983, which will be organized by PACT, CAPAB, PACOFS, NAPAC and SWAPAC, and which will entail visits to all the important music centres in South Africa and South-West Africa. Each prize-winner will also receive a work of art specially created by South African artists for this occasion. The best South African competitor selected by the judges will qualify for the Oude Meester Award of a return air ticket to an overseas international competition during 1982 for the purpose of participation in such competition. A return air ticket to South Africa is granted by Adcock-Ingram to a foreign competitor to enable the recipient to participate in the Pretoria competition. The donations made will place the International Piano Competition Pretoria 1982 among the first and foremost musical competitions in the world as far as prize money is concerned. These prizes are in fact the largest ever offered in any South African musical competition. Other concerns who made contributions to this competition are the South African Airways, Alitalia Airlines, Saambou National Building Society and the Old Mutual Insurance Company. The panel of judges will consist of recognized international musicians and well-known South African adjudicators. There is world-wide interest in South Africa's first international piano competition and enquiries have been forthcoming from the USA, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Brazil, Hongkong, Taiwan and Poland.
