This cover is postmarked on 01-04-1986 in Johannesburg. It carries an additional 14c value in the RSA fourth definitive series, depicting the Johannesburg City Hall. The hall, designed by the firm Hawke and MacKinley, opened on 7 April 1915 and was declared a national monument on 12 October 1979.
Description of the Cachet
The cachet shows the coat of arms of the city of Johannesburg. Two sable antelope stand as supporters on either side of a shield bearing three gold ingots, a nod to the city's mining wealth. A lion crest sits above the shield and a scroll below carries the motto "Fortiter et Recte". The design is printed in full colour against a cream background, with the city name set below in bold capitals. Two matching postmarks flank the 14c stamp, both struck in Johannesburg on the same day.

The cornerstone was laid on 29 November 1910 by the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn and the building, which had been designed by Messrs Hawke and MacKinley, was officially opened on 7 April 1915 by HE the Rt. Hon. Viscount Buxton, Governor-General of the Union of South Africa. The building was designed in the Edwardian Baroque style and was erected at a cost of £503 000 (R1 006, 000,00).
