This cover is postmarked on 1 October 1991 in Pretoria, with a special postmark bearing a stylised envelope emblem. It carries the South Africa commemorative stamp marking the establishment of the SA Post Office Limited, SAPO [number to confirm], issued on the day the former Department of Posts and Telecommunications was formally split into two separate companies. The split, enacted under the Post Office Amendment Act of 1991, created both the SA Post Office Limited and Telkom SA Limited as distinct entities from what had previously been a single government department. At the time of separation the postal side alone was already handling more than 7,7 million postal articles every working day across the country.

Description of the Cachet

The cachet is a black and white photograph of a tall modern office tower, the National Postal Centre, rendered as a striking vertical composition of glass and concrete against an empty sky. Trees frame the base of the building at street level. Below the photograph, "152 Proes Street / Proesstraat 152 Pretoria" is captioned in fine print, and beneath that the cover reads "Establishment of the SA Post Office Ltd / Stigting van die SA Poskantoor Bpk" in bold black text.
