TOURISM WESTERN CAPE: VICTORIA AND ALBERT WATERFRONT, CAPE TOWN Within the borders of the Western Cape Province, the visitor may enjoy the primeval landscape of the Karoo, the wonderland of the Cango Caves, the romantic beauty of the Garden Route, the majestic mountains of the Boland, a unique whale route, several beautiful wine routes, and an exceptional wealth of plants and flowers. The long coastline borders on the cold Atlantic Ocean in the west and the warm Indian Ocean in the south and harbours a string of seaside resorts, varying from quaint fishing villages to sophisticated coastal cities. Of these, Cape Town, the mother city at the foot of Table Mountain, is undoubtedly the most famous. In the course of time, the city centre had progressively been cut off from the sea by railway and freeway development. To re- establish the city's links with the sea, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront Company was formed in 1988 to convert the harbour area around the Victoria and Alfred Basins - dating from 1860 - into a waterfront centre with hotels, taverns, restaurants, theatres, mu- seums, speciality shops and professional services, whilst retaining the harbour activities. As the Waterfront is a sensitive area with numerous historical buildings, restoration and rebuilding were undertaken with great care. Today, the Waterfront is a remarkable success story. It has received awards for conservation, architecture, planning, engineering and landscape architecture - among others the International Waterfront Centre Annual Award (Washington DC) and the New York Film and TV Festival Award. The Waterfront is also a job creator promoting economical empowerment and community development - in the Craft Workshop and the Arts and Crafts Market alone, more than 2 000 employment opportunities have been generated. An extremely high standard of product quality, service, cleanliness and security is being maintained. By virtue of that and its intriguing harbour ambiance, the Waterfront has become a favourite destination with Capetonians and visitors alike. Perhaps the Waterfront experience can best be described in the words of Nobel Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu: "Everybody in the Western Cape has a stake in the success of this project. Let the Waterfront be a celebration of our diversity and of our confidence in finding each other in this new and wonderful South Africa." New York Film and TV Festival Award.
