MASAKHANE The Government of National Unity has committed itself to achieving freedom for all South Africans, including freedom from want. Understandably, this is a daunting task which needs to be undertaken in the face of great expectancy in the wider community. Clearly the Government could not tackle the long list of urgent needs alone. Community involvement and the creation of an environment where people would resume paying their rent and municipal services are vital prerequisites for eventual success. The Masakhane campaign - a call for people to build South Africa together - was launched to foster efforts in housing and development. In the spirit of Masakhane, communities have begun to use their own initiative - painting their schools, working with the police and civic organisations to ensure respect for the law, and setting up teams to help clear garbage in their residential areas. - MASAKHANE Die Regering van Nasionale Eenheid is daartoe verbind om vryheid vir alle Suid-Afrikaners te verseker - ook om vry te wees van gebrek. Vanself- sprekend is dit 'n enorme taak wat onder druk van groot verwagtinge van die breë gemeenskap onderneem moet word. Die Regering kon onmoontlik die lang lys dringende prioriteite alleen aanpak. Gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid en die kweking van 'n klimaat waarin mense betaling van hulle huurgeld en munisipale dienste sal hervat, is noodsaaklike vereistes vir uiteindelike sukses. Die Masakhane-veldtog - 'n oproep op mense om Suid-Afrika saam te bou - is van stapel gestuur om behuising- en ontwikkelingpogings te bevorder. In die gees van Masakhane het gemeen- skappe eie inisiatiewe aan die dag begin lê - om hulle skole te verf, met die polisie en burgerlike organisasies saam te werk om wetsgehoorsaamheid te bevorder en spanne op die been te bring om vullis in hulle woonbuurte op te ruim.
