This cover was postmarked on 24 October 1995 and catalogued as SAPO 6.25. It marked the 50th anniversary of the United Nations and featured the official emblem created for the occasion. South Africa had only rejoined the UN General Assembly in 1994 after decades of suspension over apartheid. So the organisation's golden jubilee the following year carried extra resonance for a country newly welcomed back into the global fold.
Description of the Cachet
The cachet features a large, glowing globe rendered in blue and green against a rainbow coloured halo, framed by two golden olive branches in the style of the UN emblem. Beneath it, on a deep blue background, the number 50 appears again in gold beside the UN logo, above the words "th Anniversary of the United Nations" in clean white lettering.
