This cover is postmarked on 3 November 1997 in Durban. It marks fifty years since Santa Claus first appeared on a South African Christmas stamp, reproducing five historic Christmas stamp designs spanning from 1938 to 1954. The five stamps trace a clear stylistic shift over that period. The earliest design from 1938 shows a simple nighttime village scene captioned Christmas Kersfees. Later issues bring in candles, an angel and finally Santa himself in the 1954 design, moving from plain seasonal imagery toward the more familiar festive figures used in Christmas stamps today. One detail worth noting is just how long South Africa had been issuing dedicated Christmas stamps by this point. With the earliest reproduced design dating to 1938, this cover actually spans close to sixty years of Christmas stamp history rather than only the fifty years suggested by its Santa 1947-1997 title.
Description of the Cachet
The cachet shows a stained glass window design in a tall pointed arch, rendered in rich jewel tones of green, blue, red and gold. A single lit candle sits at the centre, its flame glowing pale yellow inside a circular halo of colour. A red cross tops the arch above it, while sprigs of holly and a red ribboned bell sit at the base. The border of the arch is built from small repeating stained glass panels, each one a tiny mosaic of colour in its own right. It gives the whole design real depth and craftsmanship, closer to an actual church window than a simple illustration. Below the arch the title reads Santa 1947-1997, marking fifty years since Santa Claus first appeared as a stamp subject in South Africa. The five stamps above reproduce five different Christmas stamp designs spanning that entire fifty year period, from the plain 1938 issue through to the 1954 Santa design.
