Cachet: Petrol dump - do you save fuel?

Info card

SAVE FUEL The need for all oil-importing countries, including South Africa, to save as much fuel as possible in the present circumstances cannot be over-em- phasized. The point here is not only the avail- ability of this scarce commodity but also the con- siderable financial burden that the high cost of importing crude oil and petroleum products lays on the country. However, mindful of the necessity for South Africa to maintain a reasonable econo- mic growth rate in these difficult circumstances so as to provide sufficient opportunities for work for its peoples, the Government designed its fuel- conservation measures in such a way that the sacrifices demanded from the private sector cause the least possible disruption. On the other hand, it is essential that every businessman and member of the public should co-operate fully with the Government to realize our common objective of saving the maximum amount of fuel.

Additional information

This cover was postmarked on 2 April 1979 at Secunda and catalogued as SAPO 3.13. Its cachet showed a petrol pump asking "do you save fuel?", part of a national campaign urging South Africans to cut fuel use during a period of rising oil prices and import costs. The choice of Secunda as the postmark town was fitting, since it was home to Sasol's massive oil-from-coal operations, central to South Africa's efforts to reduce its dependence on imported crude.
