Cachet: The cachet on this cover is built around a bold cut paper style rose in white against a deep maroon circle, giving the design a striking, graphic quality rather than a realistic illustration. Curved lettering wraps around the circle's edge, reading "Rosafari Pretoria 1979" and "Fourth World Rose Convention" in an elegant script, with the Afrikaans equivalent mirrored beneath. Four stamps sit in a block in the top right corner, each showing a different rose cultivar in full colour, from deep red through to shades of orange and yellow. Two matching circular postmarks, each centred on a small ampersand style flourish, cancel the stamps and mark the day of issue.

DIE VIERDE WÊRELDROOSKONVENSIE Die vierde konvensie van die Internasionale Wêreldfederasie van Roosverenigings word in Oktober 1979 in Pretoria gehou. Dié liggaam is in 1971 in Hamilton, Nieu-Seeland, gestig en daaropvolgende vergaderings is in Chicago (1974) en Oxford (1976) gehou. Die lidlande van dié organisasie sluit in die Verenigde Koninkryk, Australië, Nieu-Seeland, die VSA, Kanada, Italië, Switserland, die Bondsrepubliek Duitsland, Japan, Argentinië, Pole, Indië, Israel, Frankryk, Holland en Suid-Afrika, wat terloops 'n stigterslid is. Die hoofdoelstellings van die Federasie is om belangstelling te wek in rose, die kweek en hibridisering van rose, en roskultuur in die algemeen. FOURTH WORLD ROSE CONVENTION The fourth convention of the International World Federation of Rose Societies is to be held in Pretoria in October 1979. This body was formed in Hamilton, New Zealand, in 1971 and subsequent meetings were held in Chicago (1974) and Oxford (1976). The countries that belong to this organization include the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, Italy, Switzerland, the Federal Republic of Germany, Japan, the Argentine, Poland, India, Israel, France, Holland and South Africa, which incidentally is a founder member. The chief objects of the Federation are to promote interest in roses, rose growing and hybridizing, and rose culture in general. The executive committee consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer and delegates from each member country, with, as a rule, the President being a member of the Society that hosts the forthcoming meeting. The President for the 1979 meeting is Prof. F. Ziady of Pretoria and the Secretary-Treasurer is Prof. S. Cymes of Cape Town. Every possible effort is made to attract members of the public to attend part of the Federation meetings, and the proceedings are divided into two portions, the first concerns purely business matters affecting the Federation and is conducted over a period of two days, and the second is devoted to three days of talks, discussions and debates on roses that would interest all rose growers. The anticipated attendance at the convention is approximately 750-800 people, i.e. some 450 from overseas and the remainder from South Africa, Rhodesia and other parts of Southern Africa. Apart from the purely technical side of the convention, a very elaborate social programme has been arranged, commencing with a very impressive opening ceremony. The proceedings of the convention will open with an international quiz programme confined solely to rose matters and already great interest has been shown in this from all parts of the world. Suitable and appropriate prizes will be awarded to the winners.

It carries a block of four rose stamps issued for the fourth convention of the International World Federation of Rose Societies, hosted in South Africa that October. South Africa was a founder member of the Federation when it was formed in Hamilton, New Zealand, in 1971, and this convention drew an expected 750 to 800 delegates, with around 450 travelling from overseas.
