SPORT '92 After years of sport isolation, the abolition of apartheid opened the way for South Africa's return to international sports in 1992. 35c Formula One Grand Prix On 1 March 1992, South African motorsport enthusiasts again could see the superfast Formula One racing cars in action in a full-fledged Grand Prix on national soil. The South African Grand Prix appeared uninterrupted on the For- mula One calender from 1962, when it received world champion status for the first time, to 1985. After President FW de Klerk's historic speech on 2 February 1990, negotiations to bring the Grand Prix back to South Africa were initiated immediately. The Kyalami race track at Midrand near Johannesburg was rebuilt and lengthened to 4,26 km. A new pits complex was erected at a cost of about R18 million. More than 100 000 spectators and approximately 300 million TV viewers worldwide watched the 26 Formula One cars shooting away at the start of the 1992 Yellow Pages South African Grand Prix. Nigel Mansell in his Williams-Renault came first and his team-mate, Riccardo Pat- rese, second. The current world champion, Ayrton Senna took third place in a McLaren-Honda. 35c Football (Soccer) Football can claim to be the most popular sport in the world if the number of players and spectators and the number of countries where the game is played are taken as standard of comparison. The name of soccer for the sport is derived from association football, subsequently contracted to assoc and eventually to soccer. Football had been played in South Africa for a number of years before the South African Football Association was founded in 1892. The Association subsequently changed its name to the Football Association of South Africa (FASA) and became affiliated to the British Football League. In 1903, the South African Indian Football Association was formed and in 1933 both the South African Bantu and the South African Coloured Football Associations were founded. In 1951 these three associations united to form the South African Soccer Federation. The Federation launched its first professional league, the South African Soccer League, in 1959. FASA also ran professional soccer under the National Football League. Various attempts to unite the different football controlling bodies failed repeatedly until 31 March 1991, when the new united South African Football Association (SAFA) was launched. SAFA is now recognised by both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Africa and the world controlling body, Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). 55c Total Paris-le Cap Rally Against the backdrop of Table Mountain the greatest motoring spectacle ever seen in South Africa-and the world-ended on 16 January 1992 at the Milnerton lagoon near Cape Town in front of 35 000 spectators. The Total Paris- le Cap Rally commenced on 23 December 1991 at Rouen, France. The 332 cars, trucks and motorcycles had to complete a route of 12 427 kilometres through eleven countries. Less than half of the vehicles arrived in Cape Town almost a month later. More than 1 800 people took part in the R600 million rally organised by the Thierry Sabine Organisation. About 300 million TV viewers saw Hubert Auriol of the Rothmans-Mitsubishi team arriving at the finishing point in first place. Stephane Peterhansel on a Yamaha came first in the motorcycle division and Franscasco Perlini took the honours in his Perlini in the truck section. Athletics 70c The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognised the newly founded National Olympic Committee of South Africa (NOCSA) on 9 July 1991. On 25 July 1991, the IOC invited South Africa to officially participate in the Olympic Games commencing in Barcelona on 25 July 1992. South Africans have competed in twelve Olympic Games, the first being in 1904 in St Louis, USA and the last being in Rome in 1960. From 1908 to 1960, South Africans had won 72 medals: 17 gold, 28 silver and 27 bronze. In Bar- celona the South African sportsmen and women will proudly represent their country at the Games of the 25th Olympiad, as they strive to do justice to the Olympic motto: Citius, Altius, Fortius (Faster, Higher, Stronger). 90c Rugby Of all sports rugby football has brought South Africa its greatest success in international competition. South Africa is the only country in the world which has had more victories than defeats against all opponents - including the mighty All Blacks. 1992 is an historic year for rugby in South Africa with the unification of the rugby family, the launching of the South African Rugby Football Union, and the return to full international participation. A vitally important development programme aimed at the upliftment of the game in all its aspects among undeveloped and underprivileged communities includes coaching, the improvement of fields and facilities, the training of coaches, referees and administrators and the provision of competition. R1,05 Cricket After the unification of the South African Cricket Board and the South African Cricket Union, the new United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) was accepted again in the international cricket world after almost twenty-two years of isolation, resulting in a South African team undertaking a tour of India in 1991. The South African team under Kepler Wessels surprised the world by reaching the semi-finals in the 1992 World Cup Series in Australia. During April 1992, the South Africans also toured the West Indies. UCBSA aims at developing cricket at all levels. Fourteen major cricket competitions, including the Castle Cup, the Nissan Shield and the Benson and Hedges Series, are staged annually. One of UCBSA's most important undertakings is the development programme providing cricket coaching for more than 75 000 children in underprivileged areas. Teachers and parents are also being trained as coaches on a very large scale. Ayrton Senna, die huidige wêreldkampioen, was derde in 'n McLaren-Honda.
