This cover is postmarked on 17 May 1997 in Johannesburg. The five stamps in this "Year of Cultural Experiences" set each depict a different traditional craft object, including Zulu baskets, a Southern Sotho beaded figure, a South Ndebele beaded figure, a Venda door and a Tsonga medicine gourd. The set was part of a broader 1997 South African postal theme celebrating the country's cultural diversity in the years following the end of apartheid, with each stamp photographed from an actual museum or private collection piece rather than an illustration.
Description of the Cachet
The cachet is drawn in a soft sepia and sage tone and shows a grouping of traditional African implements standing upright against a large clay pot. Spears, a bow, arrows and carved wooden staffs lean together at different angles, bound loosely with cord near their centre. The pot sits low behind them, its rounded shape sketched in outline with a paler wash of green. Below the illustration the words "1997 - Year of Cultural Experiences" run across the bottom of the cover in a deep red serif type, framed by a thin decorative border. The design draws together tools and vessels from different traditions into one still composition, setting a quiet, earthy tone for the five stamps above it.
