Cachet: The cachet shows a grey crowned crane standing in a patch of grass, its body drawn in soft blue-grey tones with a golden crest fanning out above its head. The bill is black and a patch of bare red skin shows below it, while the wing feathers carry streaks of chestnut and cream. The bird stands tall on thin black legs, one foot raised slightly as if mid-step through the grass. The illustration takes up the full left side of the cover and sets a naturalistic tone for the wetland bird stamps beside it. Below the design "World Environment Day" appears in plain black serif type across the bottom of the cover.

Additional information

This cover is postmarked on 5 June 1997 in Nylstroom, with an additional Nylsvlei Wetlands cancellation marking the same date. The five stamps depict a White-breasted Cormorant, a Hamerkop, a Pied Kingfisher, a Purple Heron and a Black-headed Heron, all birds associated with wetland habitats. The cover was issued to mark World Environment Day and ties in with the Nylsvlei wetland reserve in Limpopo, one of South Africa's important wetland sites and a Ramsar-listed area recognised for its role in supporting migratory waterbirds.
