This cover is postmarked on 3 August 1982 in Khorixas. It forms part of a South West Africa series on the region's mountains, featuring Brandberg, Omatako, Die Nadel and Spitzkuppe. Brandberg is the highest point in the country at 2 573 metres, home to numerous rock art sites including the famous White Lady painting, now believed to depict a Herero herdsman rather than the female figure its name suggests. Omatako takes its Herero name from a word meaning buttocks, a reference to its distinctive twin peaked shape. Die Nadel sits within the upper Brandberg massif and is notoriously difficult to reach. Spitzkuppe rises sharply from the Namib gravel plains and is well known for both its prehistoric rock art and the semi precious stones found in the surrounding area. One detail worth noting is the cachet itself. Rather than illustrating one of the four stamped mountains, it depicts Mukarob, the Finger Rock formation near Khorixas, a separate landmark entirely and a fitting choice given the cover's postmark location.
Description of the Cachet
The cachet shows Mukarob, the famous Finger Rock formation, rendered in warm sepia tones. A tall narrow pillar of stratified rock balances on a much thinner base, curving slightly like a bent finger pointing skyward. The layered striations running through the stone are drawn in fine detail, giving real texture to the different rock bands stacked one on top of the other. This precarious balancing shape is the whole point of the illustration. It captures a natural formation that looks almost too improbable to be real, sitting on a base far too slender for its towering height. Below the illustration the bilingual title reads SWA Mountains Berge, with Mukarob named specifically beneath it. The four stamps above show an entirely different set of formations. Brandberg rising from the Namib plains. The twin peaks of Omatako. The sharp needle shaped spire of Die Nadel. The distinctive cone of Spitzkuppe against open grassland. Together they cover a wide sweep of South West Africa's most striking mountain landmarks.

BERGE VAN SUIDWES-AFRIKA 6c-seël Brandberg Brandberg is 'n groot ronde granietberg aan die rand van die Namibwoestyn. Op die breedste is dit sowat 30 km in deursnee en die hoogste spits, die Königstein, is 2 573 m bo seespieël — die hoogste in die land. Daar is baie plekke van argeologiese belang in die gebied asook talle rotskunsvindplekke, waarvan die Maack-skuiling met die "Wit Vrou"-rotstekening die beroemdste is. Dié tekening word tans geglo 'n Herero-veewagter voorstel. 15c-seël Omatako Omatako-berg met sy tweelingpieke is in die hartjie van die vroeëre Hereroland geleë. Die Herero-naam beteken "sitvlak". Die sandsteenpieke is met dolerietlaag bedek en die hellings is met bykans ondeurdringbare plantegroei begroei. Die noordwestelike piek is 2 286 m bo seespieël en is die vyfde hoogste punt in Suidwes-Afrika. 20c-seël Die Nadel Bo-Brandberg is 'n bergmassief met talryke spitse wat deur plat vlaktes verdeel word en deur diep riviervalleie verkloof is. Die Nadel (die naald), 'n piek wat baie moeilik bereikbaar is, is in die noordwestelike hoek van die gebied tussen die Karoab- en Naibvallei. Dit is hoër as 2 000 m bo seespieël en kyk uit oor die Namibwoestyn en die Ugabriviervallei. 25c-seël Spitzkuppe Die interessante relief van die Spitzkuppe verrys skielik uit die Namib-gruisvlakte. Die grahietformasie vorm na die weste 'n skerpgepunte berg waarvan Grosse Spitzkuppe (1 728 m) die hoogste piek is. Na die ooste is die bergformasie glad en gerond, 'n verskynsel wat aanleiding gegee het tot die naam Pondokberg. Die streek is bekend vir die prehistoriese rotskuns en die groot verskeidenheid halfedelgesteentes wat daar aangetref word. N.W. BERGE IN SÜDWESTAFRIKA 6c-Marke Der Brandberg Der Brandberg ist ein grosser, kreisförmiger Granietstock am Rande der Namibwüste. An der breitesten Stelle misst er 30 km und der höchste Gipfel, der Königstein, ragt 2 573 m über dem Meer auf — der höchste im Land. Er birgt viele archäologisch interessante Fundorte und zahlreiche Stellen mit Felsmalereien, worunter die "Weisse Frau" im Maack-Überhang die bekannteste ist. Man nimmt heute an, dass sie einen Herero-Viehhirten darstellen. 15c-Marke Der Omatako Dieser Berg mit seiner Zwillingsspitze liegt im Herzen des alten Herero-landes. Der Heroname bedeutet "das Gesäss". Die Sandsteingipfel sind mit Doleriet und die Hänge mit einem schier undurchdringlichen Pflanzenwuchs bedeckt. Die nordwestliche Spitze ist 2 286 m über Meeresspiegel und damit der fünfthöchste Punkt in Südwestafrika. 20c-Marke Die Nadel Der obere Brandberg ist ein gipfelreiches Massiv, verbunden durch flache Senken, von Schluchten zerschnitten. "Die Nadel" ist eine schwer zugängliche Spitze in der nordwestlichen Ecke des Gebirges zwischen dem Karoab- und Naibtal. Höher als 2 000 m über Meeresspiegel blickt sie weit über die Namib und das Ugabrivier hinaus. 25c-Marke Die Spitzkuppe Aus den Schotterflächen der Namib steigt unvermittelt der fesselnde Umriss des Spitzberges auf. Die Granitschichten sind im Westen zu einem steilgezogenen Kegel aufgeformt, mit der "Grossen Spitzkuppe" (1 728 m) als dem höchsten Punkt. Nach Osten zu sind sie glatt und rund, was zu dem Namen "Pondok"-Berg Anlass gab, nach der lehmbedeckten Herero-Rundhütte. Nicht nur für ihre prähistorischen Felszeichnungen, auch für die grosse Vielfalt an dort zu findenden Halbedelsteinen ist die Umgegend sehr bekannt. N.W.
